      ■ Resolution of NIMBY issues with eco-friendly power solution that generates no electromagnetic waves

LS Cable & System and LS Electric are cooperating in the Internet data center (IDC) superconductivity solution business.

LS Cable & System announced on the 22nd that it will launch the world’s first superconductivity solution for IDCs with LS Electric in Korea and overseas markets such as Vietnam.

As this superconductivity solution enables large-scale 154 kV-class power transmissions at the low voltage of 22.9 kV, power supply to inner city areas can be expanded without the necessity of building new substations. In addition, as the solution does not generate electromagnetic waves, it can effectively resolve NIMBY (not in my back yard) issues.

Based on its experience of commercializing superconducting cables for the first time in the world 2019, LS Cable & System will handle supply and engineering for the cable system. As for LS Electric, it will supply superconducting fault current limiters.

The superconducting stations that will replace existing substations consist of only dividers, with no transformers. Also, the scale of the stations can be reduced to approximately one twentieth that of existing substations, which will lower construction costs and improve economic efficiency.

The superconducting fault current limiter reacts rapidly when a fault current occurs, keeping damage caused by short circuit accidents to a minimum. It helps to improve system stability by preventing IDC service suspension and reducing the risk of data loss.

The companies expect the superconductivity system to set a new standard for power infrastructure technologies in the AI era by considerably improving economic efficiency, resident acceptance and power stability for the construction of new IDCs.

A company official said, “We have embarked on overseas marketing in earnest by promoting the system to Vietnam through LS Eco Energy based on cooperation with the Vietnamese Institute of Energy.”
