LS Materials (CEO Hong Young-ho) announced on the 4th that it has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Vertiv Korea (hereinafter referred to as ‘Vertiv’), a global power infrastructure company, for cooperation on ‘data center power management solutions.’
LS Materials plans to supply ultracapacitors (UCs) as a power management solution for Vertiv's general Internet data centers (IDCs) and AI data centers (AIDCs). Through this, the company plans to create new opportunities in the existing IDC market and also take the lead in the AI IDC (AIDC) market.
UCs are high-performance power storage devices that quickly respond to rapid fluctuations in power use, so they can ensure stable power supply to AIDCs and IDCs. LS Materials' UCs boast excellent performance, with a 20-times higher charging/discharging rate and 1,000-times longer life than existing lithium-ion batteries (LIB).
This solution is expected to bring significant changes to the uninterruptible power supply (UPS) of IDCs. Until now, LIBs have been used during emergency generator operation when a power outage occurs, but as generator performance improves and power outage response times decrease, UCs are becoming a more viable alternative due to their higher output and longer lifespan.
UCs are considered a solution optimized especially for AIDCs, where computational tasks are frequent. AIDCs, which process large amounts of computational work 24 hours a day, experience severe fluctuations in power load. LS Materials plans to use UCs to respond to these fluctuations and strengthen the power stability of AIDCs.
“We have collaborated with Vertiv to apply the superior performance of UCs to data center power management solutions,” said Hong Young-ho, CEO of LS Materials. “We plan to actively enter the data center market using this MOU as a stepping stone.”
Vertiv is a global company with strengths in power management and cooling systems. It relies on its IDC business for more than 75% of its total sales of approximately $6.9 billion (approximately KRW 9 trillion).
